VIP Rd flyover project finally set to take off

Come 2013 and reaching Kolkata airport from Ultadanga will be a smooth ride. Construction of the flyover along the two-kilometer stretch from Kestopur to Baguiatias Joramandir on VIP Road is finally set to begin after much delay. Construction firm Larsen & Toubro has been roped in for the project which was planned back in 2008 after more than 20 people died when a bus fell into a ditch at Kestopur. The state Public Works Department (PWD) is the nodal agency for the project.

PWD secretary Ajit Ranjan Bardhan said construction of the flyover is scheduled to start in a few months. "Larsen & Toubro submitted the highest bid in response to a tender and was selected for the job. We will now prepare a project cost estimate that will be submitted to the Centre for sanction under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme," Bardhan said.

A sum of Rs 216 crore has been pegged for executing the project. The Centre bears 35% of the cost for projects under JNNURM. The flyover is expected to be completed by mid-2013.

Though planned by the Left Front government three years ago, the proposal remained on paper for a long time as it took the authorities a long time to prepare a detailed project report and submit it to the Centre for approval. The state government decided to include the project under the JNNURM scheme as it was facing a funds crunch.

After remaining in the pipeline for more than two years, the government prepared a detailed project report and submitted it to the Centre. The project was finally approved by the Centre in November last year.

When complete, the flyover will ease traffic chaos on VIP Road, on way to the airport from Ultadanga. At present, the Lake Town, Kestopur and Baguiati crossings of VIP Road are heavily choked with traffic.
